The University of Coimbra (UC) is a public higher education institution founded in 1290. Its mission is based on three pillars: Education, Research and Knowledge Transfer. In 2013, the University of Coimbra was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds several UNESCO Chairs. UC offers 46 undergraduate programmes, 127 master’s programmes and 77 doctoral programmes. In 2021/2022, 200 doctoral theses were completed.
UC comprises 12 research and teaching units and 38 pure and applied research centres, responsible for knowledge production across several scientific fields and bringing together approximately 2,100 researchers. Some of these centres are leaders in their respective fields and are regularly evaluated by international panels. The University also has support units dedicated to cultural, training and teaching activities.
With regard to knowledge transfer, UC strengthens its innovation policy through INOV.C, an Innovation Ecosystem bringing together more than 500 partners. As a result of these activities, in 2022, UC managed a total of 475 project grants (368 national and 107 international grants), with a total of €86.42 million contracted to support teaching, research, innovation and other institutional projects.
In the present project, the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE) and the Department of Chemical Engineering are involved.
The Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE) is a multidisciplinary Research and Development Centre established in 2007, involving the Civil Engineering Departments of the University of Coimbra (UC) and the University of Minho (UM). In 2020, ISISE was evaluated by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and received an “Excellent” rating. ISISE comprises academic staff, permanent researchers, postdoctoral researchers (under contract), doctoral students, other researchers, and technical and administrative staff.
Today, ISISE is a multidisciplinary centre bringing together researchers with expertise in a wide range of fields, including civil engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, project development, design, architecture, materials science and digital manufacturing technologies, particularly additive manufacturing technologies, among others.
